NASCAR formalizes rules permitting pit stops in another car’s stall for safety reasons

Most of what appeared in a NASCAR rule book update on Wednesday was the exact language of a clarification bulletin sent out to teams last week regarding pitting in another entry’s pit box.

If you missed it, this is allowed as long as it is for safety reasons like tightening a lug nut or removing pit equipment left attached to a car but is still subject to infractions like pitting outside of the assigned box and removing pit equipment.

The exact wording of that rule, which is Section 8.8.7.D is now as follows:

“A vehicle may receive service only when they are in their assigned pit box and/or the garage area or at NASCAR’s discretion. If a vehicle receives service in another team’s pit box to correct a safety issue, the vehicle will receive a flag status penalty (restart tail of the field or pass-through) for pitting out of the box. For example, safety issues may include tightening a loose lug nut(s), removing a fuel can, removing a wedge wrench, and removing equipment from under the vehicle. If a vehicle receives service in another team’s pit box for competition purposes, the vehicle may receive a lap(s) penalty.”

Uncontrolled tire rule

NASCAR also added wording to its rules for uncontrollable tires during pit stops that clarify a penalty will be called even if there is an open stall next to the offending team’s stall.
