The New York Mets on Wednesday named Tylor Megill their Opening Day starting pitcher at Washington on Thursday.
Mets manager opted for Megill with Jacob deGrom (shoulder) sidelined for two months and mega offseason acquisition Max Scherzer penciled in to go against his former team Friday night. The Mets will decide Thursday if Scherzer, whose been nursing a tight hamstring, can go Friday.
The Nationals will counter with Patrick Corbin on Thursday.
Megill, 26, went 4-6 with a 4.52 ERA in 18 starts for the Mets in 2021. He had 99 strikeouts in 89 2/3 innings pitched. Megill has made just three starts totaling 14 1/3 innings at Triple A. Megill allowed two unearned runs and struck out seven over 6 2/3 innings in two spring training appearances.
