Matt Leinart on Whisenhunt firing: ‘Now Marcus Mariota has a chance’

With news breaking that the 1-6 Tennessee Titans fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt after a season and a half, former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart has taken to Twitter to trash his former coach.

Leinart, a former first round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2006 and quarterback bust, worked with Whisenhunt from 2007-2009 during his tenure in Arizona. His trashy tweet is quite the case of the pot calling the kettle black. During Leinart’s 17 game starts for the Cardinals, he managed only seven wins and ended his career in Arizona completing just 57.1 percent of his passes with a 14:20 touchdown to interception ratio.

For this, it would appear that Leinart casts the blame for his lack of success on his former coach.

As for Whisenhunt, he has been terribly ineffective in Tennessee with the team managing only three wins in the 23 games he served as coach. Perhaps Leinart is correct in stating that the Titans rookie quarterback now stands a chance to help the team improve under new coaching, but his remark is somewhat rich considering what a disastrous path his career took as a former first-round draft pick.

As predicted, Leinart’s tweet triggered some interesting responses with this person pointing out the fact Whisenhunt worked wonders for San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Unfortunately, Whisenhunt just wasn’t a fit for Tennessee, so we’ll have to see if interim head coach Mike Mularkey can help Mariota and the Titans turn their dreadful season around.

As for Leinart, it sounds like he has a major case of very sour grapes that just turned into whine.
