Matt Cassel on status with Bills: ‘We’re probably gonna keep three quarterbacks’

If we are to believe Matt Cassel, perhaps the Buffalo Bills will keep three quarterbacks on their final roster after all.

The Bills held their much-anticipated, three-headed quarterback competition over the summer. Tyrod Taylor rose to the top and was named the team’s starter by head coach Rex Ryan. Ever since the announcement was made, it was speculated that Cassel, rather than third-year quarterback E.J. Manuel, could be the guy getting the axe when the Bills finalize their 53-man roster.

However, Cassel seems to think the team might stick to keeping the three quarterbacks:

“I don’t know if they want to go into depth about what the conversation was about, who’s going to be No. 2 or No. 3,” Cassel said, per ESPN’s Mike Rodak. “But every indication was made that we’re probably gonna keep three quarterbacks, and that’s all I can go off of right now.”

While Ryan would like us to believe the team has a clear-cut starter in Taylor, he has yet to start a regular NFL season game. That’s remains a bit of an unnerving fact. It would make sense to have quarterback options other than young Manuel around in case Taylor struggles.

Through the preseason, Taylor has clearly been the best of the three. However, we have to take into account that he was sometimes facing second-and third-string defenses. As it stands now, if the Bills keep Cassel, it would not be surprising to see any of the three quarterbacks starting intermittently throughout the season.
