Marvin Jones put up some of his best seasons as a member of the Detroit Lions last decade. After starring for the team from 2016-2020, the wide receiver returned to Detroit this season following a two-year stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
That second tenure came to am abrupt end on Tuesday after Jones announced he has stepped away from the team to deal with a personal matter.
“I just want to say that I have so much love and respect for the Ford Family, the city of Detroit, my teammates and coaches. To be brief, I am stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters. Although this was no easy decision, I cannot be the person/player that I need to be for this team as well as tend to my family from afar.”

Nearly immediately after the 12-year NFL veteran released this statement, Detroit announced that it has released Jones.
It’s not yet known what type of family matter Jones is dealing with. But that’s a personal issue, one that shouldn’t necessarily be for public consumption.

A fifth-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals out of CAL back in 2012, Jones spent four seasons with that team before signing a free agent contract with Detroit ahead of the 2016 campaign.
He put up his best performances with the Lions, including racking up 1,101 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging a league-high 18 yards per catch back in 2017.
After spending two seasons in Jacksonville, Jones returned to the Lions on a one-year contract this past offseason. He had recorded a mere five catches for 35 yards in six games this season before stepping away.
