A day after being scratched from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup, star outfielder Mookie Betts was officially moved back to the 10-day injured list Wednesday with right hip inflammation.
The move is retroactive to Sunday.
The 2018 American League MVP while with the Boston Red Sox, Betts is now in his second season with Los Angeles and won the 2020 World Series with the franchise. The five-time All-Star was out July 20-31 with the same injury.
He last played Saturday before being given an off day Sunday. In 87 games this year, Betts has batted .277 with 17 home runs and 44 RBIs.
Manager Dave Roberts acknowledged Tuesday that Betts was likely destined for the IL again, adding, “I’m frustrated for Mookie because he wants to be out there, and he can’t physically do it.”
He started the Dodgers’ first four games in August but exited Friday’s contest against the visiting Los Angeles Angels when his hip acted up. Betts returned to the lineup Saturday, then got a day off Sunday before the team was idle Monday.
Taking Betts’ place on the active roster is right-handed pitcher Edwin Uceta, who was activated from the injured list Wednesday after dealing with a right back strain. Uceta, a rookie, is 0-3 with a 7.64 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 12 games (one start).
