As the San Francisco 49ers prepare to play the Green Bay Packers in the NFC title game Sunday, head coach Kyle Shanahan is honoring his dad, Mike Shanahan, who’ll be an honorary captain along with 49ers legend and NFL Hall of Famer, Steve Young.
This is a pretty big deal for the Shanahan family, to be sure. And there’s more to it than just having his dad there.
As Kyle finishes out his third season as a head coach, his three-time Super Bowl-winning father has been in his corner big time all year long. Kyle shared recently that his father watches tape of every team meeting, practice and film session, and of course provides his analysis.
So, if Shanahan and the 49ers are able to beat the Green Bay Packers on Sunday to advance to Super Bowl LIV, there’s a good chance his father had at least a little bit to do with the outcome.
