Kansas City Chiefs Release Brandon Flowers

The Kansas City Chiefs, who have been attempting to trade cornerback Brandon Flowers throughout the entire offseason, have decided to completely cut ties with the Pro Bowl cornerback.

It is not yet known what caused the Chiefs to sour on their best cornerback. Though, the Chiefs did install a new press-coverage scheme last season under defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, which didn’t seem to fit Flowers’ skill set.

Flowers recorded 71 tackles, nine passes defended and one interception in 2013. While he has only three interceptions during a six-year career, Flowers had been the closest Kansas City had to a true shutdown corner prior to 2013. He put up 83 passes defended in his first five seasons.

There promises to be plenty of interest in Flowers’ services. Pure conjecture here, but the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions could to mind first. San Francisco is in need of a starter-caliber corner, while Detroit sent Chris Houston packing earlier on Friday.
