Kameron McGusty pours in 27 as Miami tops Stetson

Kameron McGusty scored 27 points — sinking a career-high six 3-pointers — to lead Miami to its fifth consecutive win, 82-72 over Stetson on Monday night in Coral Gables, Fla.

Miami (9-3) also got 16 points from Isaiah Wong, a game-high 11 rebounds from Jordan Miller, a game-high-tying eight assists from Charlie Moore and 12 points from Sam Waardenburg.

McGusty, a senior, shot 9-for-12 from the floor, including 6-for-8 from 3-point range. He didn’t miss a 3-point attempt until there was two minutes left in the game.

Stetson (4-7) was led by Chase Johnston, who scored 18 points and made 6 of 11 shots from beyond the arc. The Hatters, who had won their previous two games, also got 16 points from Rob Perry and 12 points and seven rebounds from Christiaan Jones. Stephan Swenson added a game-high-tying eight assists.

Johnston, a sophomore, set a career high for made 3-pointers.

The Hurricanes improved to 11-0 against Stetson since Miami brought back its basketball program in 1985.

The Hurricanes, who never trailed, were up 39-26 at halftime.

Miami played tough defense in the first half, keeping Stetson off the foul line and holding the Hatters to 37.9 percent shooting, including 4 of 13 (30.8 percent) from 3-point range. No Stetson player scored in double figures in the first half.

The Hurricanes were paced before the break by McGusty, who had 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting, including 3-for-3 on 3-point tries. As a team, Miami shot 46.4 percent from the floor prior to halftime, including 6 of 13 from long distance. Miami was off a bit on free throws (7-for-12).

The Hurricanes extended their lead to 51-32 on a Moore free throw with 15:04 left in the second half.

Stetson cut the deficit to 57-46 on a Jones jumper with 10:29 left, but the Hatters were never able to cut the gap to single figures in the second half.

For the game, Miami shot 45.2 percent, including 14-for-29 on 3-point attempts (48.3 percent). Miami was 12-for-20 on free throws.

Stetson shot 49.1 percent, including 13-for-26 from 3-point distance. The Hatters were 5-for-6 on free throws.
