Jose Aldo defeated Rob Font on Saturday night in a grueling five-round affair in their bantamweight bout at the main event of UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas.
Aldo (31-7, 13-6 UFC) extended his winning streak to three in the 49-46, 50-45, 50-45 decision over Font (19-5, 9-4).
“I trained for this,” Aldo said after the win. “I want to be a champion in this division and I’m working for that. Rob Font’s a tough opponent. I respect him a lot but nobody’s going to stop me. We trained to become a complete MMA fighter. I want to be as complete as I can. This is the new Aldo that you’re seeing.”
Aldo had Font reeling several times throughout the bout, including running out of time to finish off Font in the first round. He also had Font in a rear naked choke in the final round but Font refused to tap out and was saved by the final horn.
Aldo himself was dealing with significant swelling around his eye.
In the co-headliner fight, Rafael Fiziev knocked out Brad Riddell with a spinning back kick at 2:20 of Round 3 in their lightweight bout.
“I waited for this moment,” Fiziev said. “When he goes this way, he drops his hands down and forgets about spinning back kicks.”
In other action, Jamahal Hill defeated Jimmy Crute by TKO via punch 48 seconds into Round 1, Clay Guida defeated Leonardo Santos by submission (rear naked choke) at 1:21 of Round 2, Chris Curtis won by TKO (knees) over Brendan Allen at 1:58 of Round 2, and Alex Morono won by unanimous decision over Mickey Gall.
