The Baltimore Ravens have been completely retooling the offense since the end of last year to facilitate the development of quarterback Lamar Jackson. John Harbaugh hinted on Monday that the new-look offense could revolutionize the NFL.
Appearing on NFL Network, Harbaugh was informed that Brian Billick, whom he replaced in Baltimore, expects the Ravens to run an offense unlike anything the NFL has ever seen.
Harbaugh did not disagree: “I would kind of agree with that, I really do,” he said (h/t Pro Football Talk).
The coach also said he’d “bet the over for sure” on Jackson breaking Cam Newton’s all-time record for most rushing attempts (139) in a single season by a quarterback in NFL history.
Then he hinted that the Ravens will have an impact on the league similar to what the San Francisco 49ers did with Bill Montana and Joe Montana running the West Coast offense back in the early 1980s.
“The game was probably revolutionized with Bill Walsh and Joe Montana,” Harbaugh said. “What’s the next era going to be? We’re about to find out.”
Baltimore certainly has some exciting players on the roster, outside of the former Heisman winner, Lamar Jackson.
He has three running backs — Gus Edwards, Mark Ingram and Justice Hill — playing behind him who all figure to have prominent roles. Rookie speedster Marquise Brown should give Jackson a tremendous deep threat, and the passing attack will likely revolve around the team’s talented tight end group.
We’ve highlighted this offense as one that has the potential to explode in 2019. It sure sounds like that’s exactly what Harbaugh expects. Whether it happens or not, remains to be seen.
