When an athlete loves playing for a particular franchise, he sometimes accepts what’s called a hometown discount to give his club more financial flexibility to add other important pieces. Jermaine Kearse won’t be one of them.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kearse said the Seattle Seahawks will not receive a sale price to retain his services.
“I love my hometown, but I’ve put in too much hard work to give a discount. My number one priority is to take care of my family’s future, so I will consider all opportunities.”
Kearse, who was born in Lakewood, Washington — a mere 40 miles from Seattle — has played all four of his NFL seasons with the Seahawks. He also attended the University of Washington.
The 6-foot-1, 209-pound receiver tallied career-best numbers across the board this season, hauling in 49 passes for 685 yards and five touchdowns as a tertiary option in the offense.
Among 2016 free agents, Kearse’s 685 yards ranked seventh. That includes Alshon Jeffery, who likely will not leave the Chicago Bears. Kearse will have plenty of suitors looking to upgrade their depth at receiver.
Plus, a hometown discount isn’t his responsibility. Seattle has done an excellent job stockpiling and developing talent, but the franchise must be ready to pay the players what they’re worth. If the salary cap doesn’t allow that space, the athletes can head elsewhere for more millions.
Now, although the Seahawks give Kearse and excellent chance to win another Super Bowl, he’s a talented wideout who can join a better-paying contender.
Taking a discount to stay with Seattle is a commendable choice, but there’s nothing wrong with following the money.
