It’s not a secret that Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis is going to make a push for Jon Gruden to be the team’s new head coach. As we have seen with other coaching openings around the NFL in the past few years, whether Gruden returns to the league is completely up to him.
In a weekly conference call with the opposing team’s reporters this week, Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden opened up about the possibility of his brother leaving ESPN for the Raiders (via Pro Football Talk).
Nothing would surprise me with Jon,” Jay Gruden said. “I don’t want to put words in his mouth or predict anything. He hasn’t told me one way or another. He loves what he’s doing with ESPN. I know that for a fact. But I also know he loves coaching and I know that for a fact. He’s got one of the greatest jobs in sports and he loves ESPN and loves what he does, but I also know he loves the competitive nature of coaching.
“Also know that he hates coaching from time to time; Kind of like I do on a Sunday night when you go home. I don’t know. It wouldn’t surprise me one way or the other. He’s got two great jobs that he could potentially do.
Jon might want to have a conversation with his brother about to avoid when it comes to the media. These quotes can potentially act as fuel to further speculation that Gruden is considering a return to Oakland. And interestingly enough, the idea seems to make some sense. It just remains to be seen whether it’s a move he’s willing to make, especially considering how his first stint with the team ended up.
