The New Orleans Saints signed Jameis Winston to a cheap one-year contract this past offseason. Now Winston has fired his agent.
Per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Joel Segal, who previously represented Winston, has been informed that he’s been let go.
Jameis Winston contract with Saints worth just $1.1 million
When Winston signed with the Saints, fans and analysts alike could not believe how little money the contract was worth. It’s a one-year deal worth just $1.1 million.
Incredibly, Winston landed just $148,000 in guaranteed money in the deal — the entirety of which is his signing bonus.
If Winston were to meet certain incentives, he stands to earn a maximum of $2.86 million for the 2020 NFL season.
Stats show Jameis Winston is worth far more
The knock on Winston has been his turnover problems. It’s a significant issue, to be sure. Since being selected first overall during the 2015 season, he’s thrown 88 interceptions and fumbled 50 times.
That being said, Winston is a prolific passer and put up jaw-dropping stats outside of his turnovers.
During his five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in 70 starts, he completed 1,563-of-2,548 passes (61.3 percent) for 19,737 yards with 121 touchdown passes and an 86.9 passer rating.
Given the fact that a guy like Chase Daniel, who has a total of seven touchdown passes in his 10-year career, is making more than $13 million in the next three seasons, what Winston is making this year doesn’t match what he’s worth.
With that in mind, it’s not surprising that Winston is moving forward without his old agent.
