Telvin Smith is one of the most-underrated players on what is quickly becoming a dominant Jacksonville Jaguars defense. He knows this very well, indicating recently that he’s the best linebacker in the NFL.

The Jags themselves apparently agree. Jacksonville announced Wednesday evening that it has signed the Florida State product to a four-year contract extension.

“Telvin Smith is going to stay with the Jaguars for a while. That became official Wednesday, when the team announced it had signed the four-year veteran weak-side linebacker to a four-year contract extension,” the Jaguars announced, via their official website.

While the team didn’t get into numbers here, conflicting reports suggest that the deal is worth between $44 and $50 million. Either way, the 26-year-old linebacker is getting paid handsomely for his efforts.

Smith has recorded 58 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble thus far this season. This comes on the heels of him putting up 100-plus tackles in each of his first three NFL seasons.
