Inter Miami CF announced the addition of former MLS MVP Josef Martinez in a splash signing Wednesday.
The 29-year-old Venezuelan striker scored 98 goals across six seasons at Atlanta United from 2017-22.
Terms of Miami’s deal with the former MLS Cup champion, MLS Golden Boot winner, U.S. Open Cup winner and Campeones Cup champion were not disclosed.
“Josef is a champion and adding him to our group is exciting for us as we head into the 2023 season. He’s been one of the best players in the league since he first arrived and we believe he’ll make a difference here at Inter Miami,” sporting director Chris Henderson said. “We’re adding a proven goal scorer with a track record of success in MLS. We’re thrilled to have a player like Josef in our attack.”
Martinez registered nine goals and four assists in 26 matches (12 starts) in a rocky final season with Atlanta United in 2022. He was suspended by the team for one game in September for conduct detrimental to the team after he reportedly flipped over a catering table and had to be separated from coach Gonzalo Pineda.
A change of scenery could be just what the 2019 MVP needs.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to represent Inter Miami and give the best of myself,” Martinez said. “This is a club with high aspirations and that aims to be amongst the best in the league. I hope to help the team achieve its objectives and leave my mark at the club.”
Martinez scored a league-leading 31 goals in 2018 and 27 more in 2019 before missing all but one game in 2020 due to a torn ACL. He also has 16 assists in 134 career MLS matches (111 starts).
