Indianapolis Colts boss claims NFL admitted to blowing calls in Week 7 loss, demands major rule change

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay claimed on Tuesday night that the league-owned up to botching some major calls late in the team’s loss in Week 7. That is why he is pushing for a very interesting and major rule change going forward.

While the Detroit Lions vs. Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins vs. Philadelphia Eagles matchups received a great deal of attention this past weekend, the game between the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts ended up being one of the most exciting on the NFL Week 7 schedule.

Despite both teams being without their starting quarterbacks, the game was a wild back-and-forth affair that saw multiple lead changes and an exciting come-from-behind victory in the final minutes. That late rally was at the heart of post-game complaints from Colts fans and the team’s owner Jim Irsay.

In the last two minutes, the referees for the game made controversial illegal contact and defensive-pass-interference calls on back-to-back plays that kept the Browns’ final drive alive. The penalties set up a touchdown that helped Cleveland retake the lead and eventually win the game. Sending Indianapolis to a 3-4 record on the young season.

The defeat caused frustration for many in Indy. However, on Tuesday night Colts owner Jim Irsay took to his X account, formerly Twitter, and alleged the NFL admitted to wrongdoing late in the game and offered up a very interesting idea.

“The NFL admits and understands that they did not make the correct calls at the end of Sunday’s Colts/Browns Game,” he wrote. “I believe we need to institute Instant Replay for all calls, including Penalties, in the last two minutes of All Games.”

Currently, only NFL officials can call for replays on plays in the final two minutes of a half. Otherwise, the head coaches have to option to challenge calls at any other point in the game.
