The Carolina Hurricanes signed defenseman Calvin de Haan to a one-year, $850,000 contract on Saturday.

The 31-year-old unrestricted free agent joined the Hurricanes for training camp on a professional tryout and registered an assist in his preseason debut Thursday against the Florida Panthers.

de Haan previously played for Carolina in 2018-19 and registered one goal and 13 assists in 74 games.

He had four goals and four assists in 69 games last season with the Chicago Blackhawks.

“We obviously knew Calvin from his previous time in Carolina,” general manager Don Waddell said in a news release. “We like what we’ve seen from him in camp and saw this as an opportunity to increase our depth on the back end.”

A first-round pick by the New York Islanders in 2009, de Haan has 119 points (19 goals, 100 assists) in 520 games with the Islanders, Hurricanes and Blackhawks.
