Hofstra rewarded coach Speedy Claxton with a multi-year contract extension on Monday.

The extension comes two days after Hofstra locked up the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season title.

The Pride are 23-8 this season and 44-19 over Claxton’s first two seasons as head coach of his alma mater thus far.

“Hofstra is home and Hofstra is special to me,” Claxton said in a news release. “I have experienced this incredible University as a student-athlete, assistant coach, and now as a head coach. I am elated to continue to build something special here at Hofstra and proud of what we have accomplished already. We will keep moving forward with unwavering passion in everything we do.”

The Pride ended the regular season on an 11-game winning streak to go 16-2 in CAA play, and their road win over Charleston in their lone regular-season meeting served as the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, which begins next week.

Coincidentally, Charleston also signed its coach, Pat Kelsey, to an extension Monday for five years.

Claxton starred at Hofstra from 1996 to 2000, was a first-round NBA draft pick and played nine seasons with five NBA teams. He served as an assistant coach at Hofstra from 2013 to 2021 before taking over the head job.

“Speedy’s first two years as our head coach have been tremendous, and we are looking at a bright future with him at the helm,” athletic director Rick Cole Jr. said in a news release. “His love of Hofstra and the men’s basketball program is only exceeded by his work ethic and commitment to his players.”
