Betting sites stop posting Heisman odds: ‘Baker Mayfield is too big of a favorite’

Baker Mayfield

Heisman favorite Baker Mayfield has been the most popular college football player in the nation this past week, both for good and bad reasons.

The bad reason is that Mayfield did some things during Saturday’s game against Kansas that got him stripped of his captaincy on the final game of his career, which was a clear message the program is disappointed in its top star.

The good reason is that Mayfield continues to play at a higher level week-in and week-out than anyone else in college football. On that note, the popular betting site, Bovada, has decided to stop posting Heisman odds.

“Heisman odds are currently off the board as Baker Mayfield is too big of a favorite. He was 1/20 last week and would be even bigger this week (h/t college football talk).

Bovada wasn’t the only big oddsmaking entity to shut down these odds, either.

“MGM had Mayfield listed at -250 as of last Monday, when the book took the odds off the board in compliance with Nevada Gaming Control regulations. The Westgate SuperBook closed Mayfield as even a bigger favorite at -2,000 on Sunday,” via ESPN.

Mayfield deserves to win this year, of that there’s no doubt. Despite some outstanding individual performances of players like Stanford’s Bryce Love, Penn State’s Saquon Barkley and Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, nobody combines the numbers and program prestige like Mayfield does.

He’s leading one of the top schools in the nation while passing for 3,816 yards with 34 touchdowns and five interceptions and rushing for 240 yards and five scores.

When the Heisman Trophy is presented in New York in December, there’s no doubt Mayfield will be the one hoisting it above his head.
