Rich Bisaccia reportedly a candidate to become Green Bay Packers special teams coordinator

Green Bay Packers, Rich Bisaccia

Days after firing Maurice Drayton, the Green Bay Packers are reportedly in talks with Rich Bisaccia about becoming the team’s new special teams coordinator.

Bisaccia, the former Las Vegas Raiders’ interim coach, has decades of experience coaching special teams. After serving as an ST coordinator at the collegiate level in the 90s, he made the jump to the NFL in 2002. He’s since become one of the most respected coordinators in the NFL.

Once viewed as a candidate to become the full-time coach in Las Vegas, Bisaccia quickly moved on after the organization hired Josh McDaniels. While the 61-year-old is out of work right now, he’s already generating interest from across the league and it seems Green Bay is moving quickly to try and land him.

According to Tom Silverstein of. the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Packers coach Matt LaFleur is in talks with Bisaccia regarding the Packers’ vacancy. While it’s believed Green Bay would need to compete in a bidding war for his services, the organization is reportedly willing to do it.

The organization’s willingness to spend more is notable. When LaFleur first joined the franchise as head coach, he wanted to hire Darren Rizzi as the team’s special teams coordinator. However, despite a great meeting, the message was reportedly sent to LaFleur that the organization didn’t want to spend that much money.

It proved costly. Rizzi is one of the best special teams coaches in the NFL and failures on that end cost Green Bay in the playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

As for Bisaccia’s teams, they fared far better than what the Packers fielded. Las Vegas finished 11th in Rick Gosselin’s special teams’ rankings in 2021 and ranked 13th in Football Outsiders’ DVOA the season prior. If the Green Bay Packers land Bisaccia, it would be a strong start to their offseason.
