Matt Birk, who played 14 seasons in the NFL and retired following the 2012 campaign, was hired by the NFL as director of player development on Thursday. According to Sporting News, he becomes the eighth former player to land an executive job with the league.Â
Birk earned six trips to the Pro Bowl in what has to be considered a borderline Hall of Fame career. He also won the Walter Payton Award as the league’s man of the year in 2011. Overall, Birk started all 16 games in each of the final seven years of his career.
The former Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings center will work directly under fellow former NFL player Troy Vincent, who is the league’s top executive of football operations.
