A former No. 1 overall recruit in the nation back in 2015, defensive lineman Byron Cowart has requested and been granted his release from the Auburn football program.
The report comes from AL.com and also indicates that Cowart is free to play college football next season should he transfer to a school that doesn’t currently play in the SEC and won’t take on Auburn in 2018.
Cowart might be best remembered for an overly-dramatic televised decision on National Signing Day, which included him picking Auburn over Florida.
Since then, he really hasn’t panned out with the Tigers. He’s recorded a total of 15 tackles and 1.5 sacks in two plus seasons with the program. Though, his five-star recruit status likely means the defensive lineman will be a highly sought-after commodity when he ultimately decides where he’ll play next.
This comes on the heels of quarterback Sean White, also a highly recruited prospect, being dismissed from the Auburn football program following a public intoxication charge.
