Flying Oyster, Whales start strong in LOL worlds play-ins

CTBC Flying Oyster and Team Whales won their opening matches in Group B play Wednesday in the League of Legends World Championship play-in Round 1.

Flying Oyster, from Taiwan, swept Japan’s DetonatioN FocusMe, winning in 34 minutes on red and 28 minutes on blue.

Whales, from Vietnam, rallied for a 2-1 win against Team BDS of Switzerland. After BDS opened with a 24-minute win on blue, Whales answered with a 39-minute win on red and a 41-minute victory on Blue.

Flying Oyster and Whales will meet Thursday in a winner’s bracket match, while DetonatioN FocusMe will take on BDS in an elimination match on Friday.

Group A’s PSG Talon and LOUD will meet in the other winner’s bracket match on Thursday.

The Flying Oyster-Whales and PSG-LOUD winners automatically will advance.

In this play-in round, which runs through Saturday, eight teams are divided into two groups in a double elimination bracket. The top two teams in each group advance to play-in Round 2.

All matches in this round of the $2.25 million tournament are best-of-three.

After the two-play-in rounds, the world championships advance to the Swiss stage and then the knockout stage. All rounds are being contested in venues in South Korea. The knockout round will culminate with the grand final, to be played Nov. 19 at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul.
