Dusty May signed a 10-year contract extension to remain the head coach of Florida Atlantic on Saturday after leading the Owls to an improbable Final Four appearance as a No. 9 seed.
“What Dusty has accomplished in his first five years at Florida Atlantic is, in my opinion, one of the most remarkable coaching feats in the history of college basketball,” FAU vice president and athletic director Brian White said in a statement. “In addition to his tremendous coaching ability, he has proven to be an excellent program builder, a phenomenal leader of men and a great recruiter of talented, high-character individuals.
“The exposure that this program’s success has provided for Florida Atlantic University is beyond measure, and we are incredibly excited about the future of FAU men’s basketball under Dusty’s leadership.”
Financial terms were not disclosed. However, CBS Sports reported last week that May’s new deal was expected to be valued at more than $1 million per year.
“I would like to thank (president) Dr. Stacy Volnick, Brian White, our board of trustees and foundation board for their belief in the direction of our program,” May said in a brief statement. “This is an exciting time to be at FAU, and we are thrilled to build upon last season’s success.”
During the regular season, FAU (35-3) earned a ranking in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time and went on to win its first Conference USA championship. The Owls beat No. 8 seed Memphis, No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson, No. 4 seed Tennessee and No. 3 seed Kansas State on their way to their first Final Four in just their second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
FAU’s run came to an end in a Final Four loss to No. 5 seed San Diego State on a buzzer-beating shot.
May’s record as a head coach is 101-60 over five seasons — which already makes him the winningest coach in FAU program history.
