Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, who could not be with his team on the bench for the second half of his team’s 76-74 victory over Wake Forest on Tuesday, told ESPNU radio on Thursday that he was feeling better.
Krzyzewski told ESPNU’s Sean Farnham on Thursday that he was not feeling well and “could pass out” as he left the floor at the half Tuesday night, adding that he had an IV as part of his treatment in the locker room and that his condition was likely caused by the Blue Devils’ past four games in eight days.
Krzyzewski is in his final season as head coach and will give way to assistant Jon Scheyer for next season.
“That day, for Wake, I wasn’t feeling that good. But during the game, during the first half, I got lightheaded on the bench. I called Jon Scheyer and (assistant) Chris Carrawell over and said, ‘Look, I’m not feeling great, you guys do more. Just don’t hold back.’
“Then I started feeling a little bit better during the half, and then as I’m walking off the court at halftime, it’s the first time I had stood up. I really thought I could pass out.”
Krzyzewski, who just turned 75, has five national titles to his credit.
He was able to speak to his ninth-ranked team following the narrow win Tuesday night.
Thursday, he maintained a sense of humor, telling Farnham the incident was his way of celebrating his birthday but that he was “better” and that the scare could be attributed to exhaustion.
Duke’s next game is Saturday at home against Florida State.
