The Miami Dolphins and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio mutually agreed to part ways on Wednesday, the team announced.

The Dolphins are allowing Fangio to leave to be closer to his family in Pennsylvania, and Fangio is expected to be named the DC of the Philadelphia Eagles, ESPN reported Wednesday.

“I want to thank Vic for his contributions in 2023. When we assessed the season, it became apparent that this was the best path forward for all parties involved,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said in a statement. “Now, we turn our focus to 2024 and beyond with urgency as we identify the best candidate to lead our defense moving forward.”

Fangio, 65, nearly landed with the Eagles last season. Embattled head coach Nick Sirianni remains in Philadelphia, but parted with defensive coordinator Sean Desai. He was asked Wednesday about Fangio during his season-ending press conference.

“We got a lot of good targets we’re working through. A lot of guys who’ve done well in their interview process,” Sirianni said.

The Dolphins’ defense, banged-up all season, finished the 2023 campaign 10th in yards allowed and 22nd in scoring under Fangio.

Fangio’s next tenure as defensive coordinator will be his eighth in the NFL. He also has a 19-30 record in three seasons as head coach in Denver.

Miami’s next defensive coordinator will be the third in three seasons under McDaniel. The Dolphins fired Josh Boyer at the end of the 2022 season.
