Dave Gettleman hints he’ll leave Giants’ offense in Eli Manning’s hands

Eli Manning

During his introductory press conference Friday, New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman gave Eli Manning a heck of a vote of confidence.

In fact, it sure seems like he’s preparing to continue to let Manning run the offense in 2018.

Gettleman referenced the game in Philadelphia, which Manning and Co. nearly won in the first game the Eagles played without Carson Wentz. Manning had one of his best games of the 2017 season, completing 64.9 percent of his passes for 434 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

Whether that was a mirage or more in line with what the Giants can expect going forward is up for interpretation. We cannot forget the Giants lost their top three receivers for most of the year. Odell Beckham’s absence was particularly a brutal one, as was the many other injuries New York endured this past season.

Manning will turn 37 on Jan. 3, however, and has a limited shelf life, regardless of whether he’s playing in New York or somewhere else. Perhaps at this point, Gettleman would simply rather roll with a proven quantity at the quarterback position instead of rebuilding in his first year at the helm in the Big Apple.
