Darrelle Revis admits he could move to safety before he retires

Darrelle Revis

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis — one of the top corners in the NFL — could one day follow in the footsteps of Charles Woodson by moving to safety.

Woodson was one of the NFL’s premier cornerbacks during his heyday, and his move from the outside to the back end helped him continue to put up huge stats. It also helped him continue to remain one of the league’s top defenders, as his knowledge of the game and instincts for the ball made up for any lack of speed he lost as he aged.

This is a scenario that Revis admits could happen to him, but he’s not quite ready to make the transition.

“There will probably be conversations in the future about maybe moving my position to safety,” Revis said on the “Boomer and Carton Show” on Thursday (h/t NJ.com). “But as of right now, I still feel I can play at a high level, and play the cornerback position at a high level.”

At the age of 31, Revis can still dominate the outside against the top receivers in the game more often than not. Injuries have been a problem for him in recent years, and he is currently sitting out of practices as he recovers from a wrist injury.

The same wrist injury certainly contributed to what was a down season in 2015 for the All-Pro cornerback.

“It was pretty bad,” Revis said. “But I fought through it. As long as I can run and continue to do my job and not be a distraction or hindrance to the defense [I’m going to play.]

He recently had pins removed after surgery was performed to repair a torn ligament, which he played through most of the year.

The transition from corner to safety should be a smooth one for Revis when it’s time, but that time isn’t coming quite yet.

If healthy, there is no doubt Revis will be among the league’s best manning the corner this year, and he could be part of something special. Gang Green features an outstanding defensive front, which should be the catalyst for one of the NFL’s top defenses.
