Dallas Cowboys head coach put on notice after surprise comments from Jerry Jones about Bill Belichick

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy already had a lot of pressure on him heading into next season, and now his boss, Jerry Jones, has given him more reason to believe it’s Super Bowl or bust for him in 2024-25.

As far as NFL head coaches go over the last 20 years, Mike McCarthy has a regular season record that stacks up well with many of his elite contemporaries. During his 13-year career with the Green Bay Packers, he posted an impressive 125-77-2 record and the team was a playoff — if not title — contender nearly every single season he was there.

The same could be said about his four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. McCarthy has a 42-25 record leading the ‘Boys, which includes three straight seasons with 12 wins. Unfortunately, despite the success he has had in the regular season he has had trouble transitioning it into the playoffs. While he did win a Super Bowl in Green Bay (2010), his consistent postseason failures led to his ouster in Wisconsin.

The same situation is also happening in Dallas as the Cowboys have disappointed in their last three trips to the NFL Playoffs, and they were shockingly eliminated in the Wild Card round by McCarthy’s former team earlier this month. That is why he was on the hot seat during the season and some wondered if he could be fired after their loss to the Packers.

However, the 60-year-old was able to keep his job and received public support from his boss Jerry Jones. But on Tuesday the Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager kicked the door wide open to a head coach change in 2025 with the replacement potentially being an NFL legend.

In a conversation with Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports, Jones was asked about New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and the NFL boss willingly admitted an interest in getting to work with the unemployed coach.

“I know him personally and I like him,” Jones said. “There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together. None. None.”

  • Bill Belichick record by season: 7-9 (2020), 10-7 (2021), 8-9 (2022), 4-13 (2023)

A report earlier this month claimed Belichick turned away advances from Dallas when his tenure with the Patriots ended after the season. However, Jones told Yahoo “I haven’t talked to anybody that is a head-coaching candidate other than my own.”

Belichick is not expected to land a job this offseason but will likely be a top candidate for potential openings in 2025, and the Cowboys job likely will be one of them if McCarthy can’t get his talented team to the Super Bowl early next year.
