Dallas Cowboys may have lost out on adding All-Pro WR due to salary concerns

The Dallas Cowboys are typically a popular landing spot for star players who become available in free agency. Though, recently, salary cap concerns have prevented the Cowboys from getting involved on some of the highest-priced players on the market.

That’s partially due to how expensive a trio of Cowboys already is. After all, Dallas has three players who are among the top five highest-paid players at their position. Yet, recently, two of those three, Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, tried recruiting another former All-Pro to come join them in Dallas.

Shortly after the offseason got underway, Cooper Kupp revealed he’d be seeking a trade from the Los Angeles Rams. After over a month of trying to find a trade partner for the former Super Bowl MVP, the Rams had no choice but to release Kupp.

The former All-Pro has since signed with his hometown Seattle Seahawks on a three-year, $45 million contract. However, according to ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter, Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb tried recruiting Kupp to Dallas first.

Yet, the Cowboys may have been scared off from signing Kupp once they heard how much money he was in play for. That may have directly contributed to him landing with the Seahawks instead. Or perhaps getting a chance to face his former team twice a year was too intriguing to pass up on.

“Last Thursday, the Cowboys reached out about Cooper Kupp and they were interested,” Schefter said on his podcast, via Clarence Hill of All City DLLS. “Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, who I understand it, were on the phone with Cooper Kupp talking to him about the idea of coming to Dallas, and it was floated out there. And then the Cowboys heard the numbers, and they were at numbers that the Cowboys weren’t going to get to.”

The fact that the Cowboys tried landing another impact receiver is notable. Perhaps it’s a hint at their future plans in the 2025 NFL Draft, where they hold the 12th overall pick in the first round.
