D.C. United agreed to a two-year extension with defender Steven Birnbaum on Thursday, placing the team captain under contract through the 2025 season.

Birnbaum, 32, has spent his entire 10-year career with D.C. United. He has 13 goals and five assists in 235 MLS appearances (229 starts).

“Steven is in his 10th season with the team and continues to be one of the most consistent defenders in the league,” D.C. United president of soccer operations Dave Kasper said in a news release. “He is a leader in the locker room and in the D.C. community so we’re excited to extend his contract through 2025 and continue having him as a stalwart in our backline.”

Financial terms weren’t announced. Birnbaum made $750,000 in 2022.

Birnbaum has one goal in nine matches (eight starts) this season.

“Steven has a massive influence on our team both on and off the field,” D.C. United coach Wayne Rooney, a former teammate, said in the news release. “From playing with him to now managing him, he continues to be one of the best defenders in the league week-in, week-out. I’m happy we could put pen to paper with him for another two years and I congratulate him for his years of service to the club.”

Birnbaum was the No. 2 overall selection by D.C. United in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

D.C. United (3-4-2, 11 points) host Charlotte FC on Saturday.
