Cowboys won’t rule out contract extension for Ezekiel Elliott

The Dallas Cowboys picked up the fifth-year contract option on running back Ezekiel Elliott’s rookie deal back in late April.

It was more of a procedural move. With two more seasons on his rookie deal, Dallas has time to lock Elliott up on a long-term contract.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer that could in fact be coming soon.

Some have concluded that the Cowboys would hold off on extending Elliott until the contracts for quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper are settled. Both are slated to become free agents following the 2019 season.

Elliott, 23, is a little less of a worry. But his track record suggests that the running back will completely reset the market. The former top-five pick has accumulated 5,247 total yards and 34 touchdowns in just 40 career games.

Elliott is slated to make a base salary of just $3.8 million in 2019 before that number nearly triples the following season.
