At some point, Deion Sanders will focus on the long game, building the Colorado football program for the future.
Right now, Coach Prime is looking to get some wins. Quickly.
For the second year in a row, Sanders furiously added players to the Buffaloes roster from the transfer portal.
He particularly focused on the offensive line, to protect his son and the team’s starting quarterback Shadeur Sanders. Shedeur Sanders was sacked 52 times this season, the most in the nation.
So Coach Prime went to work adding offensive linemen:
- Kahlil Benson, offensive tackle, 6-6, 305, Jr., Indiana
- Justin Mayers, guard, 6-4, 320, Sr., UTEP
- Tyler Johnson, guard, 6-5, 325, Sr., Houston
- Yakiri Walker, center, 6-2, 270, Jr., Connecticut
Benson allowed one sack at Indiana. Johnson was recruited by Texas before transferring to Houston. He was rated as the top lineman in the portal. Mayers started 24 games at UTEP and was all-Conference USA last season. Walker played all 12 games at UConn and allowed one sack.
Colorado adds big group from the transfer portal
Coach Prime and his staff bolstered the defense, hitting players from successful programs.
Colorado brought in Anquin Barnes (Alabama) and Chidozie Nwankwo (Houston) on the defensive line.
They signed Edge rushers Samuel Okunlola (Pittsburgh), Keaten Wade (Kentucky) and Quency Wiggins (LSU). Cornerback Preston Hodge (Liberty).
Offensively, Colorado added two quarterback transfers from the SEC in Walter Taylor III (Vanderbilt), Destin Wade (Kentucky), tight end Chamon Metayer (Cincinnati) and receivers Will Sheppard (Vanderbilt), Cordale Russell (TCU) and Terrell Timmons Jr. (North Carolina State). Sheppard had 152 receptions for 2,067 yards and 21 touchdowns for Vandy last season.
