Chris Blewitt kicks Maulers past Stars for first win

Chris Blewitt went 5-for-5 on field-goal tries and Troy Williams tossed a touchdown pass to help seal the Pittsburgh Maulers’ first win of the season, a 21-13 victory over the host Philadelphia Stars on Sunday afternoon in Detroit.

Blewitt kicked four of his five field goals in the first half, the longest coming from 50 yards, to establish a 12-10 lead. It was 15-10 in the third quarter when Pittsburgh (1-2) recovered a fumble to set up Williams’ 8-yard touchdown throw to Bailey Gaither.

Williams led the Maulers in passing (10-for-18, 96 yards) and rushing (seven attempts, 65 yards).

The Stars (1-2) cut the deficit to eight in the fourth quarter before Case Cookus threw interceptions to Reuben Foster and Eli Walker. Cookus completed 23 of 36 passes for 238 yards and a 24-yard touchdown to Corey Coleman on the game’s opening drive.

Pittsburgh held Philadelphia to 18 rushing yards on 18 carries.
