Chiefs’ Dwayne Bowe Suspended for Week 1

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is now paying for his arrest last November for possession of marijuana by serving a one-game suspension due to violating the NFL substance abuse policy.

The arrest was eventually reduced to lesser charges of littering and defective equipment.

Bowe had these comments to share in a statement released by the Chiefs (via NFL.com).

I am extremely sorry that I can’t be on the field for the first game of the 2014 season because I made an error in judgment. I take responsibility for my mistake, and it will not happen again. I hope that my teammates, coaches, and Chiefs fans accept my sincere apology. I will be supporting my teammates in week one, and I cannot wait to get back on the field to help us win in week two and beyond as we work towards our goal of winning the Super Bowl.

This isn’t Bowe’s first rodeo, as he was suspended in 2009 for four games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Per NFL’s Ian Rapoport, Bowe’s 2015 salary of $10.75 million remains, however it’s no longer guaranteed. The argument obviously exists that Bowe is currently the most overpaid wide receiver in the NFL. To show for it, Bowe only had 57 receptions for 673 yards and five touchdowns in 2013. Hardly elite wide receiver stats.

While Bowe serves his suspension, Junior Hemingway and Donnie Avery will line up as the team’s top receivers in the Chiefs’ season opener against the Titans in Week 1.
