The Boston Celtics are getting creative as they try and rebuild a roster that fell apart following the 2018-19 season.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Danny Ainge and Co. is interested in potentially executing a three-team sign-and-trade that would send Kyrie Irving to Brooklyn, Kemba Walker to Boston, and Terry Rozier to Charlotte.
As part of the potential deal, Wojnarowski reports Boston “would likely need to surrender at least a first-round pick” to the Nets, noting talks are exploratory at this point. He also notes that Boston is trying to create a full mid-level exception as part of the deal, which works out to roughly $10 million in cap space.
The Nets are reportedly set to land Irving in free agency already, so the motivation to do a deal with Boston here would certainly revolve around adding another draft pick.
We’ve also heard plenty of reports indicating Kemba Walker is already set on signing with the Celtics.
Needless to say, it’s going to take quite a bit of cooperation, along with amenable give-and-take, from all three teams to pull off a whopper like this.
