Cardinals fire head coach Steve Wilks after one season

After weeks of speculation that he would be one-and-done in the desert, the Arizona Cardinals announced Monday morning that they have indeed fired head coach Steve Wilks.

In no way is this a surprise. Wilks seemed in over his head after being hired last winter. He ultimately led the Cardinals to a 3-13 record while overseeing an offense that averaged a league-worst 14.1 points per game.

This was never really the greatest of fits. A defensive mind, Wilks’ inability to help rookie quarterback Josh Rosen progress under center was a major issue throughout the season.

The expectation now is that Arizona will look for an offensive mind to replace Wilks as head coach.

As it relates to the former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator, he’s likely best served in that role moving forward. It’s similar to when the division-rival 49ers fired Jim Tomsula after one season back in 2015.
