Hilarity ensued when Cam Newton and Josh Norman encountered one another Friday night at a celebrity kickball tournament.
David Newton of ESPN.com had the pleasure of passing along the details of the less-than-friendly chat, which actually started during a conversation Newton was having with a woman who showed up with a Denver Broncos cellphone case.
Newton had told the woman that he was “hurt deeply” by her cellphone case and was trying to convince her to repent when Norman showed up and got in on the action. As Newton argued with the woman, Norman knelt in front of Newton with a television a microphone in his hand to do an interview, per the report.
“No, I’m not doing that. Leave. You’re distracting me. Something that you’re really good at,” he said.
He asked about the upcoming Week 15 battle between the Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins, to which Newton replied, “Can’t wait. Really can’t. It’s going to be kind of reminiscent of how we used to battle in practice. … I just look forward to it.”
Remember, these two have a history of getting on one another’s nerves. They got into some fisticuffs last season during training camp (read more about that here), though, they do not appear to still harbor resentment towards one another.
Now, this is where things get interesting, and, we might add, a bit amusing.
“Norman: ‘Do you think the headband you have on is your spirit animal?’
“Newton has been wearing a headband, something he has not done in the past, since offseason workouts began. Norman noticed.
“Newton: ‘I kind of resemble it to Josh Norman’s hairdo. I don’t know what it really is. Been trying to find out for a couple of years now. This is kind of the resemblance.’
“Norman: ‘Who would win out of you and Josh Norman?’
“Newton: ‘That’s a broad question. It’s nothing that Josh Norman could do that I couldn’t do.’
“Norman: ‘Who’s the winner? Josh Norman or Cam Newton?’
“Newton: ‘Next question, please.'”
If you haven’t already put a circle around the Week 15 date between Washington and Carolina, you probably should go ahead and do that right now.
Both teams carry high expectations into the 2016 season. The Panthers are obviously trying to get back to the Super Bowl after Von Miller and Co. eked out a win in Super Bowl 50. Norman joins a squad in Washington that has a deep run in the playoffs on its mind.
We’re willing to bet Newton takes some deliberate shots Norman’s way, but who will win? It’s going to be a blast watching them duke it out.
