Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Charles Sims, a third-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, is expected to miss 12-14 weeks and will undergo surgery on his right ankle this upcoming weekend.

Sims was a surprise pick of the Buccaneers this past May, especially considering how deep they were at that position prior to making the selection. The former West Virginia standout recorded nearly 1,500 total yards and 14 touchdowns in his only season with the Mountaineers.
The rookie running back had been an impressive performer thus far in training camp and was expected to be a part of what had to be considered a deep rotation of running backs in Tampa Bay.
As ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicated, there is a possibility that the Buccaneers could place Sims on injured reserve with a designation to return, which would enable him to suit up later in the season.

Overall, this isn’t huge blow to the Buccaneers running game. They have Doug Martin set to return after an injury-plagued sophomore campaign. In addition to that, Bobby Rainey and Mike James were impressive during the 2013 season.
