Brian Kelly contract extension with Notre Dame to be ‘done here pretty soon’

Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly last received a contract extension in 2016, and following the 2019 season he has two years remaining on his current deal.

Speaking with Pete Sampson of The Athletic at an alumni event in Florida Friday, the coach divulged he expects that to change soon. Kelly said, “We are in the process of putting together another contract. We’ll have that done here pretty soon,” per Sampson.

Previously, Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick expressed a desire to keep Kelly on board until his retirement.

“We want Brian to retire at Notre Dame,” said Swarbrick before the start of the 2019 season. “I’ve had great conversations about what the length might look like and we’ll have a contract that reflects that desire.”

The Fighting Irish aren’t quite national title contenders these days, but Kelly has the program running strong, having gone 23-3 the past two seasons and capping last year’s campaign with a blowout win in the Camping World Bowl over Iowa State.

And with Kelly and the university seemingly being on the same page about the future, a contract extension should be right around the corner.
