The West Virginia Mountaineers will need a new men’s basketball coach this season after Hall of Famer Bob Huggins revealed his plans to resign late Saturday evening. Huggins was arrested Friday night after being charged with driving under the influence, blowing a .210 on the breathalyzer.
Huggins informed his team he wouldn’t be coaching them in 2023 earlier on Saturday after his prior incident the night before. Reports from the locker room indicate fellow staff members and coaches were “in tears” after Huggins delivered the news. Contained within his announcement was the admission that no one knows who will be coaching the Mountaineers this season.
This isn’t the first incident for Huggins this offseason. The 2015 Big 12 Coach of the Year also used several homophobic slurs back in May, leading to the 69-year-old accepting a sizable pay cut due to his actions.
Huggins had a career coaching record of 863-389 across 38 seasons, spanning Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas State, and West Virginia. He also went 34-26 in NCAA Division 1 tournament play.
The Mountaineers will presumably immediately embark on their search for Huggins’ replacement, shoes that will be tough to fill at this stage of the offseason. The top assistants on the Mountaineers staff are, in no particular order, Ron Everhart, Josh Eilert, and DerMarr Johnson.
