The Buffalo Bills don’t have the luxury of heading into the 2018 NFL season with a starting quarterback they can depend on, which is why they used the No. 7 overall pick on rookie Josh Allen out of Wyoming.
During the offseason, Allen was relegated to No. 3 on the depth chart, with Nathan Peterman and AJ McCarron on equal footing to win the starting job. And that’s exactly how things stood early in camp and how they’ll continue to stand, at least for now.
However, general manager Brandon Beane hinted that things might not stay the same going forward.
“Right now we’re going with Nathan and A.J. with the majority reps with the ones and twos, but giving Josh at least a period a day – at least,” Beane said during an interview with John Kryk of the Toronto Sun.
“We’ll do that through the first preseason game, and then we’ll adjust from there and decide, Are we going to keep it the same? Are we going to give him more reps? Or are we going to give him less? Everything is earned here.”
Beane also said Allen has “done a real good job,” doesn’t get frustrated, which he thinks the veterans see, and that Allen, “definitely seems calm, and not overwhelmed or anxious about the opportunity he’s got.”
It’s worth noting that Allen has reportedly been the best quarterback in Buffalo early on during camp.
If he can come out and show he’s clearly the best quarterback when the Bills host the Carolina Panthers on August 9, then it’s going to be fascinating to see if Buffalo abandons the McCarron/Peterman battle and throws Allen into the starting job going forward.
