Astros SP Corbin Martin undergoes Tommy John Surgery

The Houston Astros were already likely to add starting pitching depth ahead of this month’s trade deadline.

That’s now become a necessity after the team announced on Friday that young hurler Corbin Martin underwent Tommy John Surgery earlier in the week.

Martin, 23, had been pitching in the minors after making his MLB debut with Houston earlier in the season. The former second-round pick from Texas A&M pitched to a 1-1 record with a 5.59 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in five starts.

According to MLB.com, Martin entered this season as Houston’s No. 5 ranked prospect. This is obviously a major blow for the youngster.

Despite heading into this weekend’s action with a 55-32 record, Houston’s starting rotation remains a question mark. Brad Peacock is currently on the IL and Collin McHugh has struggled to a 5.51 ERA in 15 appearances.

This might expedite a trade for a proven starter.
