After a concerning sequence that required him to be taken off the Fenway Park field on a stretcher, Houston Astros starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi was placed on the 15-day injured list with a lower left leg injury Tuesday.

Odorizzi pitched Monday night in the Astros’ 6-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox and went five innings, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk while fanning four. But in the bottom of the fifth, he collapsed while running off the mound to cover first base and favored his left leg.

The right-hander, an All-Star with the Minnesota Twins in 2019, underwent an MRI exam Tuesday.

“I was pleased with what I saw. I was surprised it wasn’t swollen or black and blue,” Astros manager Dusty Baker told reporters. “I was very surprised. Hopefully that’s a good sign.”

Odorizzi is 3-2 with a 3.13 ERA across seven starts in 2022. He owns a career 3.92 ERA and a 71-65 record in 226 career games (222 starts) with Kansas City (2012), Tampa Bay (2013-17), Minnesota (2018-20) and Houston.

In a corresponding move, the Astros recalled right-hander Seth Martinez from Triple-A Sugar Land. Martinez has played in five major league games, including two this season. He has not allowed a run in 2 2/3 innings for Houston this year.
