Baylor head coach Art Briles thinks Robert Griffin III and the Dallas Cowboys would be a terrific pairing.
Appearing at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. to watch four of his players compete, Briles commented on where the best landing spot for his former player could be:
“You could have a dream. That would probably be making it come true,” Briles said, via Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News. “That would be a great place for him. It’s a great organization; being back in Texas and with the Cowboys and having a chance to get in there under Romo for three years. Not that they need to sell tickets, but it wouldn’t hurt ticket sales.”
While this isn’t a new idea — RG3 potentially landing in Dallas — it sure seems to be gaining some steam.
It was only a few days ago that Troy Aikman said “I believe as I sit here today that either Johnny Manziel or Robert Griffin III will be in Dallas as a back-up,” speaking with SI.com’s Maggie Gray.
A move back to Texas could be just what he young signal-caller needs to rejuvenate his once-promising career. After getting off to one of the best starts in NFL history as a rookie in 2012, Griffin has experienced a series of setbacks that culminated with him not only losing his job to Kirk Cousins this past summer but getting knocked all the way down to third string.
Thankfully he’s taken the humbling experience well, by all accounts. Perhaps a year off was just what he needed, and from this point on in his career the only direction he can go is up.
At this point, the Washington Redskins are playing coy about their intentions for RG3. He’s still under contract and would cost $16 million to keep around for next season. It’s not happening. He’ll either be released or Washington will trade him, but at this point the former seems the more likely option, given the big cap hit.
Landing in Dallas as a back-up to Tony Romo would be a dream for Griffin. He would be able to learn from one of the best in the game for as long as Romo’s body will allow before emerging once again as one of the most dangerous offensive players in the league, provided his health remains intact.
