Well this trade didn’t necessarily work out for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The NL West bottom feeders designated right-handed pitcher Trevor Cahill for assignment on Monday, likely marking the end of a career that didn’t even last three full seasons.Â

Cahill is 1-6 with a 5.66ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 19 appareances on the season.
The 26-year-old righty was acquired from the Oakland Athletics in a blockbuster trade back in December of 2011. Arizona yielded Jarrod Parker, Ryan Cook and Collin Cowgill in the deal.
While Cahill struggled to the tune of a 22-28 record in Arizona, Parker blossomed into an ace for the A’s prior to losing out on the entire 2014 season due to a UCL tear. Parker is 25-16 with a 3.73 ERA in his A’s career. Meanwhile, Cook earned an All-Star appearance back in 2012 and is a member of the back end of Oakland’s rotation.
With Cahill designated for assignment, there will be a ton of potential suitors. Interestingly enough, these very same A’s could show interest in the righty. After all, that’s where the vast majority of his success in the Majors has come.
Cahill is signed through next season with nearly $17 million of guaranteed money remaining. If Arizona is going to work out a trade prior to releasing him, it’s going to have to pick up a vast majority of that salary. It’s unlikely that he will accept an assignment to the minors.
