When the 2023 offseason began, the Arizona Cardinals hired Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon to replace Kliff Kingsbury as the team’s new head coach. Gannon’s defense allowed the second-most points in his first season on the job, which is exactly where the Cardinals ranked before he took over.
However, Gannon’s defense took a gigantic leap to 15th in points allowed last season. Now, the Cardinals are getting their defensive-minded head coach a new toy to work with and he already knows how it works best.

Arizona Cardinals sign Josh Sweat to contract worth $19M per year

Hours into the start of NFL free agency, the Arizona Cardinals came to a four-year agreement with Philadelphia Eagles pass-rusher Josh Sweat. According to NFL Network’s insider Ian Rapoport, Sweat is signing a contract that’s worth up to $76.4 million and includes up to $41 million in guarantees.
Sweat will turn 28 at the end of the month and is coming off an eight-sack season in Philadelphia. He’s spent his entire seven-year career with the Eagles, where the 2018 fourth-round pick not only developed into a starter, but became a Pro Bowler in 2021.
Now he’ll look to bring Philadelphia’s winning ways with him to Arizona, where he’ll be reunited with coach Gannon. After ranking 15th in sacks last season, the Cardinals will take all the help they can get, and Sweat has the potential to be a star in Arizona.
