Angels SP Griffin Caning to miss rest of season with elbow inflammation

Just when Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Griffin Canning started to put things together on the mound, his rookie season will now come to a close due to an elbow injury.

An MRI revealed that the 23-year-old right is suffering from mild inflammation in his pitching elbow and he will be shut down for the remainder of the season.

Canning made his MLB debut on April 4 and experienced his share of inconsistency adjusting to the improved talent. While he will finish the season with a 4.58 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 90.1 innings, Canning had found his rhythm recently with a 2.12 ERA and 17/5 K/BB ratio in his last three starts.

Fortunately for Los Angeles, the inflammation will not be a problem when Canning returns for spring training in 2020. He’ll be a favorite to rejoin the team’s rotation and could be part of a nice duo with Shohei Ohtani.
