The Los Angeles Angels placed left fielder Taylor Ward on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to facial fractures he sustained after being hit by a pitch from Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah.
Ward had been taken to a Toronto hospital after he was struck by the pitch in the fifth inning of the Angels’ 6-1 loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday.
“That’s probably the worst feeling ever,” Manoah said. “Definitely want to pray for him and his family. That’s the last thing you want to do, no matter the situation, no matter the team, no matter anything. I feel really bad about it. I’ll definitely be looking to see how he’s doing.”
Ward, 29, is batting .253 with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs in 97 games this season. In six seasons, all with the Angels, he is a career .255 hitter with 52 home runs and 167 RBIs in 391 games.
Also on Sunday, the Angels selected the contract of infielder Kevin Padlo.
Padlo, 27, is 1-for-8 with a double and a run in three games this season.
